Deadly Galerina Galerina autumnalis (Pk.) Smith & Singer Cap 2.5-6.5cm across, convex becoming flatter or with a slight umbo; dark brown to ochre-tawny, fading to yellowish or buff with disc sometimes remaining darker; smooth, sticky with translucent striate margin. Gills adnate or with a slight decurrent tooth, close, broad; yellowish becoming rust. Stem 30-90 x 3-l0mm, hollow, sometimes enlarged toward base; whitish above, brownish to blackish base; vertically lined base and lower part covered in dense white mycelium; finely felty below evanescent ring on upper stalk with some white veil remnants. Flesh thick on disc, thinner at margin; watery brown fading to pale buff. Odor mealy when crushed. Taste (taste only with great care) mild to mealy. Spores ellipsoid, roughened, with a slight depression, 8-9 x 4.9-6µ. Deposit rust. Pleurocystidia abundant, 52µ long. Habitat scattered or clustered on hardwood and conifer logs and stumps. Common and sometimes abundant. Widely distributed throughout North America. Season May-October. Deadly poisonous.
